General Questions

Is FreeCAD really free?

Yes — completely free under LGPL2+. No subscription, no trial, no usage limits, no commercial restriction. Personal use, commercial use, redistribution, and modification are all permitted at no cost.

Who develops FreeCAD?

FreeCAD is developed by a global community of volunteers and sponsored contributors. The project started in 2002 and reached its 1.0 milestone in 2024. Source code lives on GitHub at github.com/FreeCAD/FreeCAD.

What is the latest stable version?

FreeCAD 1.1.3 is the current stable release as of July 25, 2026. The 1.x series is the actively-maintained line; future releases will be 1.1, 1.2, etc.

Is FreeCAD safe to install?

Yes — FreeCAD is open-source software developed in public on GitHub. The Windows installer is signed; SmartScreen may show a warning on first launch which you can dismiss with "More info → Run anyway".

Install & Setup

What operating systems does FreeCAD support?

Windows 10/11, macOS 10.13 (High Sierra) or later including Apple Silicon, and most Linux distributions. The Linux build is shipped as a portable AppImage that runs on any modern distro.

What are the system requirements?

Minimum: 8 GB RAM, OpenGL 2.0 GPU driver, 64-bit OS. Recommended: 16 GB RAM, dedicated GPU (GTX 1060 / RX 580 or newer), SSD. For FEM simulation: 32 GB RAM is comfortable.

Can I run FreeCAD without administrator rights?

Yes — use the portable .7z (Windows) or AppImage (Linux). Extract anywhere in your user folder and run the binary directly. No registry writes, no admin prompt.

Why does Windows SmartScreen warn about FreeCAD?

SmartScreen flags less-common downloads even when they are safe. Click "More info" then "Run anyway" — FreeCAD is open-source and the installer is signed by the FreeCAD project.

Why does FreeCAD not open?

Most common causes: corrupted user config (delete %APPDATA%\FreeCAD), missing Visual C++ Redistributable, antivirus quarantining DLLs, or outdated GPU driver. See our troubleshooting guide for the full checklist.

Features & Workbenches

What is a workbench in FreeCAD?

A workbench is a collection of tools for a specific task — Part Design for solid modeling, Sketcher for 2D drawing, BIM for architecture, FEM for finite-element analysis, Path for CNC, TechDraw for technical drawings. Switch via the dropdown in the toolbar.

Which workbench should beginners start with?

Part Design. It is the modern parametric workflow that drives most FreeCAD use cases. Sketcher is invoked from inside Part Design, so you learn both at the same time. See our beginner guide.

Does FreeCAD support assemblies?

Yes — the built-in Assembly workbench shipped with version 1.0. It supports parts, joints (revolute, fixed, slider), and motion solving. Older A2Plus and Assembly4 community workbenches still work for legacy files.

Can FreeCAD do CAM and generate G-code?

Yes — the Path workbench generates G-code for CNC mills, lathes, and routers. Free, fully featured, with community-maintained post-processors for LinuxCNC, Mach3, GRBL, Marlin, Heidenhain, Fanuc, and more.

Does FreeCAD have FEA / simulation?

Yes — the FEM workbench wraps CalculiX and Elmer solvers for static structural, modal, and thermal analysis. Free and capable enough for real engineering work, though setup is more manual than commercial Sims.

Does FreeCAD have BIM tools?

Yes — the BIM workbench is a full architectural-design environment with IFC import/export, walls, doors, windows, structural elements, and 2D drawing generation via TechDraw. Comparable to ArchiCAD or Revit on the open-source side.

Can you do 2D drawing and drafting in FreeCAD?

Yes — the Sketcher gives you constraint-based parametric 2D, the Draft workbench covers general 2D drafting, and TechDraw produces dimensioned technical drawings from your 3D model. FreeCAD is parametric-3D-first, though, so for pure 2D-only drafting a dedicated 2D tool such as LibreCAD can feel lighter.

Can I use FreeCAD as a free CAD viewer?

Yes. FreeCAD opens and displays STEP, IGES, STL, OBJ, DXF, DWG and 40+ other formats at no cost, so it works as a free CAD viewer with full 3D rotate, zoom and measure. It is a complete editor rather than a lightweight viewer, so if you only need to glance at a file a dedicated viewer may open faster.

File Formats & Compatibility

What is FreeCAD's native file format?

.FCStd — a zip archive containing XML metadata and BREP geometry. Open format, fully documented, can be opened with any zip tool to inspect the contents.

Can FreeCAD open SolidWorks files?

Indirect: have the original opener export STEP, then import into FreeCAD. Direct .sldprt import is limited and may lose features. STEP is the safe interchange format with all major paid CAD tools.

Can FreeCAD open AutoCAD DWG files?

Yes — via the ODA File Converter integration. Most DWG files round-trip correctly. Complex DWGs with proprietary AutoCAD features (dynamic blocks, VBA-driven entities) may lose elements.

Can FreeCAD export STL for 3D printing?

Yes — File → Export → STL Mesh. For curved surfaces, lower the deviation to 0.01mm in the export dialog. See our 3D printing guide for the full workflow.

What other file formats does FreeCAD support?

STEP, IGES, STL, OBJ, DXF, DWG, IFC, SVG, FCStd, plus 40+ more via the Mesh and Import workbenches. STEP is the recommended neutral format for solid geometry interchange.

Learning Curve

How long does it take to learn FreeCAD?

Most users feel productive within 5-10 hours of practice. Full proficiency across multiple workbenches takes 30-50 hours, comparable to Onshape, Solid Edge, or Fusion 360.

Is FreeCAD harder to learn than Fusion 360?

Fusion 360 has a slightly shorter onboarding for absolute beginners — UI polish is more refined. After 5-10 hours of practice the gap stops mattering for most workflows. FreeCAD's parametric model and conceptual approach are nearly identical to Fusion.

Where can I find FreeCAD tutorials?

The official FreeCAD wiki (wiki.freecad.org) covers every workbench in detail. YouTube has hundreds of free FreeCAD 1.0 tutorials — search for "FreeCAD tutorial" to find current content. The FreeCAD forum (forum.freecad.org) is also active and helpful for beginner questions.

Do I need to know programming to use FreeCAD?

No. FreeCAD is fully usable through its graphical interface. Python scripting is a powerful option for advanced users — automating repetitive tasks, generating geometry from parameters — but it is never required for normal modeling.

Professional Use

Can professional engineers use FreeCAD?

Yes — and increasingly do. CERN, NASA contractors, small engineering firms, and a growing list of mechanical product designers ship work built in FreeCAD. The 1.0 release marked a maturity threshold; adoption has accelerated since.

Is FreeCAD good enough for commercial product design?

For most mechanical product design — yes. The Part Design + Assembly + TechDraw + FEM combination covers the design pipeline most product designers need. Where it falls short: heavy generative design, organic surfacing for industrial design, and team-collaboration workflows that assume cloud-managed files.

Can I use FreeCAD for architectural drawings?

Yes — the BIM workbench is a full architectural-design environment with IFC import/export. Smaller architecture firms have shipped real building documentation built in FreeCAD. Drawing generation goes through TechDraw to produce dimensioned plans, sections, and elevations.

Does FreeCAD support cloud collaboration?

Not natively — FreeCAD is a local-first tool. Teams use git, Nextcloud, or Dropbox to share .FCStd files. The lack of cloud-native collaboration is a real gap if your team relies on Autodesk Docs / OnShape style real-time editing.

Comparisons & Alternatives

Is FreeCAD better than free Fusion 360?

For 2026: yes for most users. The Fusion 360 personal-use license has been progressively restricted (no commercial use, fewer documents, no simulation). FreeCAD has none of those restrictions and is fully open-source. See our full comparison.

Can FreeCAD replace SolidWorks?

For 80% of mechanical design workflows — yes. SolidWorks still wins on weldments, sheet metal automation, and surfacing complexity, but FreeCAD covers basic-to-advanced parametric design for most product-design and engineering use cases at zero cost.
